Saxony State Election: Kretschmer Doesn't Rule Out Alliance with BSW

Saxony's Minister President Michael Kretschmer (CDU) has not categorically ruled out a coalition with the Sahra Wagenknecht Alliance (BSW) after the state election. However, he criticized the BSW for lack of clarity and knowledge about their program.

Kretschmer also rejected Wagenknecht's demand to make a coalition dependent on partners supporting a peace solution in Ukraine. He emphasized the need for a relationship with Russia despite the ongoing war and sanctions.

The CDU's lead over the AfD has recently diminished in the polls. Kretschmer wants to continue ruling without the Greens and has ruled out a coalition or cooperation with the AfD.

Kretschmer urged voters from other parties to strategically vote for the CDU to prevent populists from gaining power. Former civil rights activists, Birthler and Meckel, warned the CDU against a coalition with the BSW, citing concerns about their foreign policy positions and statements on Ukraine.

Kretschmer and Söder, the Minister Presidents of Saxony and Bavaria, respectively, also rejected coalitions with the Greens for the federal election.
