In the run-up to the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, the French rail network was the target of a massive attack that caused considerable disruption to traffic. Arsonists targeted three of the four high-speed TGV lines to Paris, which the transport minister condemned as an ‘outrageous criminal act’.
Over 800,000 travellers were affected and repair work is expected to take several days. An extensive deployment of 45,000 police officers, 10,000 soldiers and 2,000 private security personnel is planned to provide security during the Olympic Games.
Although the attacks on the railway facilities appeared to be coordinated, there is no clear evidence of a direct link to the Olympic Games. The geopolitical context of the Games is tense.
Despite calls to exclude Israel due to the Gaza conflict, the country will take part in the Games. These tensions also put a strain on the traditional Olympic truce.
