Discovery of 1893 Shipwreck in Lake Michigan

In 1893, the Margaret A. Muir schooner, carrying cargo of bulk salt, sank in a storm with 50-mile-an-hour winds after rounding the Straits of Mackinac and heading toward Chicago's port on Lake Michigan. Captain David Clow, who had survived at least three earlier shipwrecks, and his crew barely escaped in a lifeboat, but the captain's dog was lost. The 1872 schooner Margaret A Muir, discovered in 50ft-deep waters off Algoma, Wisconsin, was built in Manitowoc, Wisconsin and named after the daughter of its original owner, Capt. David Muir. The ship was carrying a cargo of bulk salt when it sank in 1893 while captained by David Clow.
