Taiwan braces for the arrival of Typhoon Gaemi, the most severe typhoon in years, with wind speeds of up to 190 km/h. The government declares a work-free day, schools and the stock market remain closed, and transportation is suspended.

President Lai Ching-te emphasizes the importance of safety. The typhoon is expected to hit the northeast coast of Taiwan and the effects may last until Friday.

Over 4,000 people are evacuated in the vulnerable Hualien region, where landslides are a concern. Gaemi also affects China, Japan, and the Philippines, causing high alert and floods.

In the Philippines, the typhoon results in 16 deaths and affects 770,000 people. In China, the provinces of Zhejiang and Fujian are on red alert, with train services suspended.

The city of Beijing prepares for heavy rain and potential flooding. Tourist attractions in Beijing and accommodations in mountainous areas are temporarily closed.

The public is advised to limit outdoor activities and stay away from hills and riverbanks. Fishermen worry about the impact on their livelihoods and Taipei streets are deserted.
