Israel criticizes Palestinian President Abbas for 'interim government' with Hamas

Israel has strongly criticized Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas for agreeing to an 'interim government for reconciliation' with the rival Palestinian group Hamas, mediated by China. Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz accused Abbas of embracing Hamas, which Israel considers a terrorist organization.

The agreement, reached during a meeting in Beijing, aims to establish a national unity government that will exercise authority over both the Gaza Strip and the West Bank. However, Israel and its close ally, the United States, reject Hamas's involvement in any post-war order for Gaza.

The situation is further complicated by Israel's ongoing military operations in the Gaza Strip. Meanwhile, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has arrived in the United States for a visit, including meetings with President Joe Biden and a speech to Congress.

Palestinian Factions Hail Declaration of Unity in Beijing, but Skepticism Is High

Politics
Fatah and Hamas signed a unity statement in Beijing, praising China's support, but analysts doubt the rivals will end their split, as past unity efforts have failed. In 2007, the parties engaged in a civil war in which Hamas forcibly took over Gaza from the Fatah-dominated Palestinian Authority, which retains limited autonomy over parts of the West Bank. The statement supports the formation of a temporary government for Gaza and the West Bank, but skepticism remains.
