Meta Releases Competitive Open-Source AI Model Llama 3.1 405B

Meta has launched its open-source AI model, Llama 3.1 405B, which is competitive with closed rivals. Developers have the flexibility to customize the model according to their needs.

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg believes that open-source AI can unlock numerous benefits. However, the model is currently only available in the US due to concerns about the EU's regulatory framework.

Llama 3.1 is the largest open-source AI model ever created, with 405 billion parameters trained using over 16,000 Nvidia H100 GPUs. It outperforms GPT-4 and Anthropic's Claude 3.5 on benchmarks.

The model is expected to surpass ChatGPT's usage by the end of the year. Meta has used its Open Compute Project strategy and synthetic data to develop and improve Llama 3.1.

The company has also tested the model for potential cybersecurity and biochemical use cases. The Meta AI assistant, powered by Llama 3.1, will feature an 'Imagine Me' function to insert users' likenesses into generated images and will integrate with Meta's Quest headset.
