EU Commission Approves Billion-Dollar State Funding for Gigabit Networks in Germany

The EU Commission has approved the funding of gigabit networks in Germany, with 38 billion euros being allocated towards the project. This funding will be divided equally between the federal government, states, and municipalities.

The goal is to make gigabit internet available to all households and businesses by 2030. The funding will cover the costs of infrastructure such as empty pipes and active equipment, and the threshold of 100 Mbps will no longer be a requirement.

Subsidies will cover up to 100% of the costs. While industry associations are skeptical of the state funding, the aim is to significantly improve gigabit broadband network availability in underserved areas.
