American-Russian journalists Alsu Kurmasheva and Evan Gershkovich have been sentenced to prison in Russia. Kurmasheva, who holds dual citizenship, was sentenced to six and a half years for allegedly spreading false information about the Russian military.

Gershkovich, a Wall Street Journal reporter, received a 16-year sentence for alleged espionage. The trials have raised hopes for a possible prisoner swap between Russia and the US, and President Biden has called for their release.

The swift and secretive nature of the trials has drawn criticism from media organizations and human rights activists. Kurmasheva's employer, Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty, has condemned the trial as a mockery of justice.

The US has accused Russia of using American citizens as bargaining chips, and tensions between the two countries have escalated over the conflict in Ukraine. The convictions highlight the crackdown on independent journalism in Russia, with RFE/RL designated as a foreign agent and an undesirable organization.

The international community has called for the release of the journalists and other political prisoners held in Russia.
