Belarus proposes 'solutions' for German sentenced to death

The government in Belarus is reportedly proposing 'solutions' in the case of a German man sentenced to death in the country. The man, who was convicted on charges of terrorism and mercenary activity, has been in custody since November 2023. The process is related to the Kastus-Kalinouski Regiment, a Belarusian volunteer group fighting against Russia.

The international human rights organization Wjasna brought attention to the case, which has been partly held behind closed doors. The German Foreign Office and the embassy in Minsk are providing support to the man, with consular access granted.

Belarus is the only European country that still carries out the death penalty, and executions are not made public nor are bodies handed to families. Belarus is a close ally of Russia.
