European Heatwave and Health Warnings

A heatwave is sweeping across southern and central Europe, with temperatures reaching up to 44C in Spain. The heatwave, driven by hot, dry air from North Africa, has prompted health warnings in several countries.

Wildfires have also broken out in Greece, Croatia, and Italy, and Serbia has reported record power consumption. Dust from the Sahara is affecting several areas, including Ceuta, Melilla, the Balearics, and the eastern Canaries.

The heatwave is expected to peak soon, with the highest temperatures recorded in southern Spain. Climate change is making heatwaves more intense and frequent.

Meanwhile, heavy seasonal rain in China has led to widespread flooding, with many major rivers exceeding flood warning levels. In the UK, approximately six million people, including vulnerable groups such as young children and the elderly, are at high risk from extreme heat.
