EU Commissioners Boycott Hungarian Council Presidency in Protest of Orbán's Solo Efforts

The decision by EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen to boycott informal Council meetings in Hungary, which currently holds the Council presidency, has sparked anger in Hungary. The boycott is a reaction to Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán's solo efforts in Ukraine policy, where he has met with Putin, Xi, and Trump.

As a result, several EU countries, including Sweden, Finland, Poland, and the Baltic states, have also announced that they will not participate. The Hungarian government, as well as Minister Janos Boka, have criticized the EU Commission's decision, accusing it of not wanting to cooperate with all institutions and ministers.

This boycott marks an unprecedented move by the EU Commission and will impact events planned by Hungary until the end of the year, including a foreign summit on August 28-29. The traditional inaugural visit to the Hungarian Presidency by the EC delegation has also been canceled.
